THE overwhelming response from the public has always been negative towards the Riverside plans and I am delighted that Councillor Lourie is making this an election issue.
The real thanks, however, go to the plethora of opposition groups who invested considerable time and money in to fighting this campaign and remind us that people power is not dead.
I am disappointed with the lack of clear local leadership, from both our Lib Dem MP and local councillors, who failed to see that such a seismic change in the Twickenham landscape should have been an election issue in 2006.
Councillor Lourie's climbdown now gives us an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start again. I will be vigorously campaigning and consulting with the public over the next few months for Twickenham to be put back on to the Richmond Borough map.
For too long, Twickenham has been neglected as the 'poor relation' by councillors who do not live on this side of the borough and think of the town as primarily a civic centre, when it is so much more.
