WALKING long distances is the secret of long life for a pensioner who celebrated her 100th birthday.

Doris Coe, of Tulsi House in Church Gardens, Sudbury, was surrounded by friends, family and Brent North MP Barry Gardiner on her big day.

Mrs Coe grew up in Kilburn where she lived with her late husband George.

She worked at the McVities factory from the age of 14 until she moved to an office job, then retiring at the age of 78.

Her two sons, Raymond and Alan, and five grandchildren were at the celebrations to sing Happy Birthday to the lively centenarian, who was proud to receive a card from the Queen.

She said: “I’ve always been active both as a child and an adult. I know how important it is to keep my body moving and I would never take the bus.

“I prefer to walk from place to place and cover long distances when I can.

“That’s my secret to staying young.

“This has been my first ever birthday celebration and what a wonderful way to do it. Having my closest family and friends here to celebrate my 100th birthday with me has just been wonderful.”
