A SUPPORT centre for cancer patients celebrates its 10th anniversary next month, having helped more than 3,000 people and their families cope with the disease.

The Mulberry Centre, in the grounds of West Middlesex Hospital, Isleworth, ran just a handful of support sessions when it started.

It now offers therapies ranging from aromatherapy to shiatsu, as well as counselling, welfare rights advice and a variety of workshops.

The centre was founded as a result of the Pulse Appeal, which was launched by the West Mid's then chief executive, Jane Kelly, in 1996.

In response to patient feedback, the appeal was aimed at funding a dedicated drop-in centre for people with cancer.

Hospital staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to raise the necessary money.

The many donations from local businesses, schools and clubs were recognised on a Tree of Life, which stands in the centre's reception area.

The service continues to rely on the support of volunteers, who help run the support sessions which are so important to those dealing with cancer.

Sam, who was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, is one of the users.

"Talking to other people with cancer, some worse off than me, and sharing stories made me feel much more positive," she said.

"I don't know what I would have done without The Mulberry Centre."

All services are provided free, but it costs £650 a day to run the centre. It relies heavily on public generosity and the support of businesses.

It is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday, and until 8pm on the first and third Thursdays of the month. No appointment is necessary.

Birthday celebrations begin with the Mayor's Concert tonight (Friday) at Hounslow Civic Centre. Tickets for the show, which begins at 7.30pm, cost £7, £5 for concessions. They are available from the centre or on the door. The music, arranged by Hounslow Music Service, ranges from Abba medleys to classical favourites.

The centre is holding an open day on Wednesday from noon to 7pm, to allow people to see what it does and meet members of its friends' association.
