CONSERVATIVE party leader David Cameron paid a visit to a Hayes DIY store this morning (April 1).

Mr Cameron dropped into the B&Q store, in Glencoe Road, and spoke with customers at the shop before taking to the stage and outlining his intentions to reduce the deficit and to scrap Labour plans to increase National Insurance (NI) payments.

Labour plan to raise NI contributions from employers and staff by 1p in the pound. This is due to be implemented next April.

The Conservatives have pledged to halt the increase for those earning less than £45,000 a year, and this news has received the backing of some of the country's leading business figures.

Ian Cheshire, Chief Executive of international home improvement retailer Kingfisher – the company who own B&Q, was one of 23 chief executives from leading companies to have signed a letter in opposition to the proposals. He was also in attendance to greet Mr Cameron.

The Conservative leader gave a 15-minute speech before taking part in an impromptu Q&A session with store workers and customers, who raised topics such as the environment and Heathrow's Third Runway.
