THIS week is Carers Week and I am writing to highlight the vital work done by people looking after a friend, partner or relative with cancer.
Macmillan Cancer Support is calling for greater recognition and support for carers, as well as celebrating the contribution they make to society, which saves the economy £87billion a year.
We know from new research that 74 per cent of people caring for a loved one who is ill, frail or disabled have reached 'breaking point' because of the pressure of their responsibilities.
Macmillan works with partner organisations to provide support services for people caring for someone with cancer, including practical help so carers can take a much-needed break.
Also, having the right information easily available is important, and Macmillan has information and support centres and benefits advice services to help with medical, emotional, practical or financial questions.
If readers would like to find out more about Macmillan services for carers and our involvement in Carers Week visit www.macmillan. org.uk/carers, or for more about local Macmillan services call 0800 500 800.
