CROWDS lined the streets of London to watch as more than 8,500 performers took part in the New Year's Day Parade 2010.

A bumper crowd of more than 550,000 people shook off their shivers and gave a warm welcome to entries from across the world on January 1.

Teams from 22 of London's boroughs also competed for a charity prize pot in the Let's Help London Challenge, by entering floats and performances on the theme of 'let us entertain you'.

Westminster's entry, featuring characters from the Wizard of Oz in celebration of the film's 70th anniversary, came in third place behind Brent and Merton.

The float, which featured deputy council leader Cllr Robert Davis as the scarecrow and Warwick ward's Cllr Nickie Aiken as Dorothy, was followed by children from the Sylvia Young Theatre School, based in Rossmore Road, Lisson Grove.

They picked up £5,000 which will go towards Westminster mayor Cllr Duncan Sandys' chosen charity, which is the St Andrew's Youth Club, in Old Pye Street, Pimlico.

Hammersmith and Fulham came in 10th, with a performance from Albert and Friends Instant Circus charity, winning the borough £1,000.

The judging panel based their decisions on three criteria – how closely the entry matched the theme, the effort invested in staging the entry and how appropriate the entry was in relation to the borough.

The judging panel included the Ambassadors of China and Columbia, and was overseen by Roger Bramble, deputy lieutenant of Greater London.
