TheLabour Government's disastrous decision to press ahead with a third runway is not only a vicious blow to residents but demonstrates that Gordon Brown's rhetoric about climate change is just green-wash.
We face a dangerous and uncertain future due to the threat of climate change, and yet the Government wants to allow this airport to generate millions of tonnes of additional greenhouse gases every year.
Predictably the announcement included promises in a pathetic attempt to 'balance' this dreadful decision. The Transport Secretary assured us, for example, that additional flights would be subject to "air quality conditions". Why should anyone believe him? Air quality in places in and around Heathrow already breaches UK and EU standards.
We need more jobs, but not in this industry. There are many other areas we should be investing in instead, such as better railways, warmer homes and clean renewable energy.
The Green Party will fight on to stop this government's destructive policy becoming a reality. There are many steps ahead before it can be implemented and residents will soon get a chance to show the Government what they think - at the ballot box.
