The nation's first specialist free clinic for gambling addicts has opened its doors in Westminster - and immediately faced questions over its long-term future.

The Soho Problem Gambling Clinic, in Frith Street, will treat serious gamblers for their addiction during 12-week intensive courses.

But the centre has received just £250,000 from the gambling industry for a 12-month pilot, at least £1million short of what is needed to finance a three year programme.

Dr Henrietta Bowden-Jones, lead consultant psychiatrist, said: "Gambling is seen as more socially acceptable in certain cultures, but if someone has a problem that problem will manifest itself in basically the same way. It's same with the amount of money a gambler is spending. I see people who've lost £50 and people who've lost millions, it is all the same if it effects their family or finances adversely."

A 2007 survey of the gambling industry found one in five problem gamblers became addicted. Gamblers Anonymous believes there could be as many as 600,000 problem gamblers in the UK, defined as people whose habit becomes detrimental to their health, family or finances.

Based in the heart of London, the clinic will also open its doors to the local Chinese community which has a reputation for hard gambling.

Patients can refer themselves to the 1 Frith Street clinic or be referred by their GP.  Email gambling.cnwl@nhs.net
