A nurse who educates and helps Londoners with sexual health is travelling to Swazliand to help prevent the spread of HIV.

Abena Akom specialises in sexual health, health promotion and outreach in the boroughs of Brent, Islington and Camden.

During her career she has carried out successful testing initiatives and health promotion talks in churches, pharmacies, gyms and night clubs.

This autumn, Abena plans to go on a mission to Swaziland with a charity to help prevent the spread of HIV.

“I love my job and my passion has led me to do a mission to Swaziland in autumn this year through a registered charity called Challenge Ministries,” said Abena.

“I heard about them when they came to visit my church a few months ago and they showed a video clip about orphans and women who had been trafficked and raped in Africa and the video really touched me.

“God gave me a vision that I should go and use my skills where it is needed and work with these missionaries to make a difference to the lives of others.”

Abena intends to visit Swaziland, in Africa, on a missionary trip for two weeks in October.

She will visit schools, villages and churches to raise awareness, educate locals about sexual health and train doctors, nurses and pastors in the area.

“Over 40% of the population in Swaziland is affected by AIDS and the life expectancy is 33, one of the youngest in the world.

“It is a country that is fighting for life.

“I intend to raise funds to do some amazing work out there and my vision is to build up a clinic and train nurses and doctors to do similar health promotion work in various settings.”

Abena is currently asking for donations to help fund her missionary trip to Swaziland, visit her JustGiving page for more details.
