A possible site for Fulham Boys School has been found as the race to find a new home gets tighter.

The former Watermeadow Court estate in Townmead Road, Fulham, has been put forward as a possible permanent site for the Church of England free school which had its funding pulled by Michael Gove at the 11th hour last week.

The news comes two days after schools minister Lord Nash told Fulham Boys School (FBS) a viable permanent site needs to be found quickly if the Department for Education (DfE) is to consider granting the pulled funding so they can open in September as originally planned.

Chelsea and Fulham MP Greg Hands and Greg Smith, leader of the Conservative opposition at Hammersmith and Fulham Council, sent a letter to the leader of Hammersmith and Fulham, Steve Cowan, this morning (July 11) suggesting the option.

In the letter, they write: "We urge you to give serious consideration to disposing of this site for the school."

The 0.48 hectare Watermeadow Court is owned by the council and has been empty for a while after its social housing was deemed inappropriate to live in.

Watermeadow Court is in Townmead Road

Hammersmith and Fulham's prevous Conservative council, which was ousted in May's local elections, had an agreement with a developer to build new social housing as well as private housing on the site but no formal planning applications exist and no planning permission has been granted.

Mr Hands said: "At the meeting with Lord Nash on Wednesday the council suggested the Carnwath Road site where the super sewer drill is set to be but that's unrealistic because even though we've fought the super sewer in Fulham it doesn't look like we've won.

"There is also permission for a developer to build on that site so it would cost a lot to buy it from them to put FBS there. This site is owned by the council, it could be sold to the DfE quickly and would mean these 84 boys would have a school to go to in September.

"I hope the council can work with us on this and give these boys the school they were promised."

He added that FBS said they are interested in the possibility of the Watermeadow Court site and would like to see what can be done to save the school.

Education secretary Michael Gove pulled the plug on the school's funding last Monday (June 30), blaming the new Labour administration reviewing plans to close Sulivan Primary School which was to merge into nearby New King's Primary, leaving Sulivan's Parson's Green site free for FBS.

FBS was set to move into the site after two years on a permanent site in Gibbs Green, West Kensington.

The council denies making changes to its plans, insisting the DfE are solely responsible.
