EMERGENCY plans are in place in case of severe weather in Brent.

Teams in Brent are on standby over the New Year and are ready to respond to any severe weather related problems following early indications of further storms and potential flooding across England this week.

Brent Council emergency teams are ready to deal with severe weather related problems in the borough, including flooding and emergency homeless cases. 

The council also have a ready supply of salt and gritting teams are on standby should the weather deteriorate further and has worked with the police, fire brigade and the ambulance service to ensure the response is coordinated.

Councillor Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, said: “We want residents to enjoy the New Year celebrations and to feel assured that the council and its partners have robust plans in place to deal with any severe weather related emergency. I would encourage local people to do what they can to have a safe and enjoyable break by keeping an eye on the weather forecast and following advice. Please also look out for elderly neighbours who are most vulnerable during these times.”

Social services also have an emergency duty team in place to deal with any urgent child or adult welfare matters and can be contacted out of hours on 020 8863 5250.

The latest forecast from the Met Office for Wednesday January 1 said: “Rain and strong winds will spread east through the morning, with gusts of 50 to 60 mph likely, especially along the south coast. Heavy showers follow later. Localised flooding possible. Maximum Temperature 11 °C.”

From Thursday January 2 to Saturday January 4 the forecast is: “Thursday windy with sunshine and scattered showers, perhaps with hail and thunder. Friday and Saturday showers or rain, and very windy on Friday with coastal gales likely.”

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for counties south of London on Wednesday January 1 and no flood warnings have been issued for north west London.
