A 'BOY racer' has been jailed for his part in a Wembley road collision that left a 22-year-old woman fighting for her life.

MohammedAkhtar, 23, of Horace Road in Newham, was sentenced at Harrow Crown Court on Friday December 23 for his part in the race.

Hewas given fourteen months in jail for dangerous driving and was disqualified from driving for twelve months. He will also be forced to re-sit a driving test before driving again.

Thecollision happened late in the evening of Thursday October 13 this year when Mohammed lost control of his Honda Civic Type R on Watford Road, Wembley and collided with a telephone box seriously injuring his female passenger.

A policespokesman said: "Through CCTV officers were able to prove that the driver was involved in a race with another unknown car for at least half a mile prior to the collision, and had just completed an overtaking manoeuvre.

"Forensicanalysis of the CCTV also showed a minimum speed of 64 mph going through the shopping area of Sudbury Town, and a minimum speed of 65 mph 300 meters prior to the crash. Collision reconstruction from marks at the scene showed a speed of 59-63 mph as he lost control."

The22 year old woman suffered serious brain and pelvic injuries among others, and although she made a partial recovery she still suffers both physically and psychologically.

DetSgt Chris Osborne of the Road Death Investigation Unit at Alperton Traffic Garage who investigated the case said: "This is a sad case whereby a young lady suffered appalling injuries at the hands of a 'boy racer'. Fortunately a rigorous investigation ensured that we were able to recover vital CCTV that was able to prove the danger of Mr Akhtar's driving that led to the collision. Hopefully this

will serve as a warning to others that driving at double the speed limit could well end up in a prison sentence"
