IT DOESN'T surprise me in the slightest that Tory council leader Peter Thompson is refusing to refund residents for the disastrous performance of the council's refuse collection service ('Give them refunds? Don't talk rubbish', Chronicle, November 6).
He's no doubt saving the money so he can award himself and his little chums from the ICG, who have been propping his administration up for the last four years, another thumping great pay hike if his party wins next May's council elections.
Councillor Thompson already pays himself £46,000 a year for doing his 'voluntary' job.
On top of this, he flew out to
Cannes for a £13,000 council taxpayer-funded junket in the spring when the borough was sinking beneath the rubbish left by the new SITA waste collection service. At one stage, a quarter of recycling and garden waste was left to rot in the streets. But never mind, because Thompson and others were having a thoroughly good time, at our expense, on the French Riviera.
The Tories and their ICG coalition partners know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Pensioners now have to fork out £25 for the council to collect bulky items of waste, which has led to more fly-tipping.
This, in turn, has meant the council has to pay a six-figure yearly sum for the cost of its clearance. A false economy if ever there was one.
But who cares if whole areas of Hounslow are being turned into a dumping ground - as long as those who lord it over us from the civic centre can continue to have their snouts shamelessly in the trough while hacking away at the education budget for Hounslow?
