Young and old alike are to benefit from more than £40,000 of investment in grassroots community groups.

The Big Lottery Fund announced that in its latest round of Awards for All grants, Vaughan School PTA, the Harrow Elders Group, Saathi, and Ansar Youth Project had all been chosen to receive cash injections.

Voluntary organisation Ansar Youth Project, which is based in Canning Road, Harrow, and provides activities for ethnic minority, refugee and Muslim youngsters, gained £9,965.

Trustee Miqdaad Versi, 22, said: "The money is going to be used for a mentoring scheme for young people between the ages of 11-16.

"We will train 25 volunteer mentors and each will have two or three mentees at the beginning."

Saathi, a group for Asian elderly established in May 2007, was handed £9,470.

Its 25 members meet fort-nightly on a Monday at The Lodge in Pinner Road, Harrow, for health and spritirual guidance, yoga practice and English tuition.

Co-founder Satish Parmar said: "Saathi has been running on a shoe-string budget since May 2007.

"The funding will enable us to purchase education materials, invite guest speakers from various institutions and provide educational day trips to places of interest."

The Big Lottery Fund gave £9,932 to Harrow Elders Group, whose members meet every Monday and Wednesday for five hours to play cards and enjoy a vegetarian lunch at Bede Anandappa Centre, in Binyon Crescent, Stanmore.

Secretary Jayant Doshi, 69, said: "The money will be used to train and encourage people to learn bridge. It's proven that it's good for your brain."

Ten thousand pounds was given to the Parents' and Teachers' Association at Vaughan School in The Gardens, West Harrow, which celebrated its centenary this year.
