Uxbridge will get a pre-election gift from Boris Johnson: the loss of its station ticket office.

The Mayor of London, who hopes to be elected as MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip next May, has been spearheading a programme of ticket office closures to reduce costs to the Tube system, which was announced last year.

Now a list of the first stations to be axed – and when the axe will fall – has been released by Transport for London (TfL).

The office in the part Grade II-listed Uxbridge station in High Street is one of the first. Work is due to start next April and last up to two months.

Ruislip Gardens and South Ruislip stations, also in the mayor’s target constituency, face the same fate at the same time. Other borough stations take their turn as the summer progresses.

The Mayor’s plan is to replace staffed ticket offices with more ticket machines plus ‘roving groups’ of staff to help travellers.

Transport unions reacted with fury when the measures were announced. TfL faces a huge cut to its annual budget from 2016, and says the changes will free staff to assist customers and make them feel safer with their presence on platforms and in hallways rather than in underused ticket offices. TfL says fewer than three per cent of journeys today involve a visit to a ticket office.

Mr Johnson, said: “With major line upgrades continuing apace, a new 24-hour Tube service and more staff out and about to help customers at stations, it’s clear that 2015 will be a key chapter in the history of our iconic Tube.

"The network is carrying a staggering number of people each day and as our population grows we are continuing to invest to ensure the Tube’s future success.

"Our plans are all about giving the Tube the tools it needs to keep London and its economy moving in the 21st century.”

According to the TfL works schedule, 'ticket hall transformations' will begin in February and run through the rest of next year.
