THE streets of Ealing will be car free and cycle friendly as the Mayor of London launches his second year of Sky Ride, in the borough.

On Sunday 18 July, families are invited to get on their bikes for the free 12km cycling event to see the sights of Ealing and stop off at festival areas to soak up the entertainment.

There will also be four guided rides from neighbouring boroughs including Hounslow, Hillingdon, Hammersmith, Harrow and Brent to the starting point in Ealing.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, said: "Sky Ride is a fantastic event, where everyone - no matter what age or cycling ability - can experience the fun of the bike, free from interference from cars.

"It will be a veritable festival of cycling in the heart of Ealing - celebrating the cleanest, greenest, handiest way of getting about town. A real cycling revolution is taking place in London and I want to say to Ealing residents that there has never been a better time to give pedal power a punt."

Skyride 2010, organised by the Mayor, Sky and Ealing Council, will also see celebrities getting on their bikes with the hope of attracting more than the 11,000 people who took part in last year's Sky Ride in Hounslow.

Cabinet member for Transport and Environment, Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, said: "I'm delighted that Ealing has been chosen as one of the boroughs to host the Sky Ride. Cycling is one of the most environmentally friendly forms of transport and is a great way of keeping fit, so I hope the event is a great success and encourages more people to get on their bikes."

Sir Chris Hoy, Sky Ride Ambassador, said: "Sky has a genuine opportunity to make a positive difference to people's lives by encouraging as many people as possible to get on their bikes. I had a fantastic time at last year's events in London and it was great to see so many families enjoying all the activities and having fun."
