Calls for step-free access to be introduced at Rayners Lane underground station have been knocked back by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

Navin Shah, London Assembly member for Harrow and Brent, launched his petition aiming to demonstrate the desire for lifts to be installed at the station, managing to gather 215 signatures and submitting the names to the mayor on March 5.

Mr Shah said: “This much needed improved access with lifts for the elderly, families with young children and disabled people will also help local traders and enhance economic growth.

"I’m aware that this is a listed building but do strongly believe that it is feasible to accommodate lifts to the station without impacting on the heritage value the station has.

"I hope that the mayor will respond positively to the petition.”

Mr Johnson's office however have told Get West London this morning that there are 'no plans' to bring lifts to the station, which serves both the Piccadilly line, and the Metropolitan.

Labour's Rayners Lane Councillor Krishna Suresh said: “We need this facility to serve all sections our community including old, infirm and the families.”

Mr Johnson recently commissioned a feasibility study which will present the business case for bringing lifts to Harrow-on-the-Hill station which could cost over £20million, with Harrow Council already setting aside £3million for the project.

A Mayor of London spokesman said: "London has one of the most accessible transport networks in the world and the mayor is committed to making as many stations as possible step-free.

"Funding for such schemes is not unlimited, however, and is focused on locations where improvements benefit the greatest number of passengers.

"There are no current plans to introduce step-free access at Rayners Lane, but we always look at how we can work with boroughs to identify whether funding opportunities from third-parties or developer contributions might exist."

The Deputy Mayor for Transport Isabel Dedring has offered to meet with Assembly Member Shah to discuss the matter further and to see whether such opportunities exist for Rayners Lane in the future.
