THE MAYOR of London has backed the Chronicle's campaign to clean up Hounslow's streets.

Boris Johnson visited the town centre last Thursday (March 29) to launch his nine point plan for the future of Greater London.

He said: "It is important to improve the state of the streets to increase footfall to the area and bring money into the high street. We want nice clean streets to encourage shoppers."

This newspaper started the drive for a cleaner borough after an unprecedented number of complaints from readers fed up with the state of their environment.

Mr Johnson was in the high street for about an hour where he talked with shoppers and answered questions about the future of Hounslow.

As part of his re-election campaign Mr Johnson promised to restore 300 acres of green space and plant 20,000 street trees across London as well working to transform local high streets.

He added: "You (the Chronicle) need to work with us to keep the streets clean."
