Volunteers have cleared riverside pathways of plastic bags and litter to help marine wildlife to flourish.

Waterway charity Thames21 invited people to help out in its annual Cleaner Thames Challenge on Saturday September 21.

A team of 50 people armed with litter-pickers and wellies met at Hammersmith Bridge to clear the walkway on the south-side of the river.

Last year, more than 260 volunteers removed eight tonnes of litter between Hammersmith and Isle of Dogs in east London.

Chris Coode, senior programmes manager at the charity, said: "Volunteers in our annual Cleaner Thames Challenge have dramatically reduced the build-up of harmful litter on the foreshore. This was a chance for volunteers to have a direct impact on the health of our capital’s iconic river and be part of a global movement to clean up our oceans, rivers and lakes."
