Blood donors coming up for their next donation are asked to make sure they help keep stocks topped up over Christmas.

NHS Blood and Transplant, which collects blood donations, says the festive season can be a risky time for blood supplies, as donors put off attending a session because of family commitments, Christmas shopping, office parties and such like.

The demand for blood does not drop, however, and because blood and its component parts needs to be used soon after it is given, it is vital that donors attend a session close to the Christmas holiday if they can.

Sessions will be held on Thursday, December 8 at Botwell Parish Social Centre in Botwell Lane, Hayes, from 12.45-3pm and from 4.30-7.30pm.

There is also a session at the civic centre in Uxbridge High Street on Monday, December 12 from 9.30am-12.30pm and 2-4.30pm.

If you are in good health, aged 17-65 years old and weigh at least 7st 12lb you can donate, subject to the routine health questionnaire. You can give blood if it is at least 16 weeks since your last donation.

All session have a walk-in provision although waiting times vary. Appointments can be made at http://www.blood.co.uk/
