A tiny Russian hamster benefited from advances in veterinary medicine as it underwent micro eye surgery.

The hamster was taken to the veterinary clinic by staff at Pets at Home, in High Road, Cowley, when they noticed it could not open its eyes.

The condition was due to a birth defect.

The delicate operation involved a special general anaesthetic for small animals. The patient was back on all four legs again after just three minutes.

The surgery involved finding where the eyelids would have originally opened and making an incision to recreate an opening for its eyes.

The staff at Pets at Home are now looking for a new home for their brave hamster.
