A RECENTLY-finished concierge building near the main entrance to the former RAF Bentley Priory site in Stanmore has been gutted by fire.

The blaze broke at in the office building, which lays behind the marketing suite on the new luxury housing estate in The Common and replaced the old military gatehouse, at 8.55am today.

London Fire Brigade said: "A small office was destroyed but no-one was hurt." Crews from Willesden, Wembley, Stanmore and Mill Hill have extinguished the flames.

The 57-acre site is being transformed into a luxury housing estate by Barratt Homes, which is building new homes and constructed the concierge building, and City and Country Group, which is converting the former Grade II* Listed mansion house into £1million-plus flats.

The Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust is going to turn part of Bentley Priory into a Battle of Britain Museum and its executive consultant Squadron Leader Erica Ferguson, said: "Thankfully it's not any of the historical buildings. My heart stopped when I heard there had been a fire."

A comment from Barratt Homes is awaited.
