GYM members and swimmers were evacuated mid-workout after a fire at Stockley Park which took over two hours to bring under control.

Four fire engines and 20 firefighters were called at 11.39am yesterday to the Virgin Active Health Club in Bennetsfield Road, Stockley Park, Uxbridge.

London Fire Brigade confirmed the blaze appeared to be an electrical fault which completely gutted one room in the building.

The three floor lesiure centre was evacuated entirely and firefighters only brought the fire under control at 1.59pm.

One witness, who was on his way to the gym at the time said: "It seemed dramatic, there were firefighters and police there, you could see smoke damage.

"The staff were brilliant, they got people lined up into rows and gave them all blankets, it was very organised.

"What can you do if you are using the gym or swimming at the time, it must have been horrible."

Virgin Active confirmed that the gym would be closed until Friday, for new fire extingushers to be fitted and testing after they were used to put out the blaze.

In the mean time, gym members can use other Virgin Active clubs in the area, including the one in Uxbridge town centre.
