THE Hayes Christmas tree lights were switched on last week in an understated and intimate ceremony.

More than 150 residents congregated around the Hayes Town Centre bandstand as the tree was illuminated and carols were sung by the Minet Junior School choir.

The evening was overseen by David Brough, chairman of the Hayes Town Partnership, and councillors Janet Gardner and Lynne Allen were on hand to switch on the lights.

Extra ward budgets were set aside for this year's Christmas display, making it bigger and better than ever before.

Mr Brough said: "It went very well; there was a great turnout and it was an excellent community event that kicked off the festive season in grand style."
