A swan on the busy M4 westbound caused severe delays for people travelling in the morning rush hour.

Traffic piled up between junction 2 and 3 Brentford and Heston services with reports of congestion on the A4 Sutton Court Road in Chiswick, as drivers waited for the big bird to be taken off the motorway.

BBC Travel reported there were major delays in the area.

Traffic officers from the Highways Agency attended the call out and the male swan was safely taken off the hard shoulder and was being transported to a sanctuary in Windsor.

The Highways Agency said they were called to reports of a swan around 7.34am between Junction 2 and 3 westbound on the M4.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "He is alive and in a good state.

"He was walking around the carriageway and was collected by traffic officers.

"The speed limit was reduced to 50mph and later to 30mph.

"The incident was dealt with by 8.10am."

This is not the first time this year animals have caused chaos on the busy M4.

In January three runway horses galloped on the M4 causing a five vehicle pile up which led to motorway being closed for six hours.
