A BENEFIT gig has been organised to raise cash for a drummer battling cancer who has played with some of the most famous musicians in rock.

Mac Poole, who lives in South Ruislip, shared the stage with rock icons Led Zeppelin before they became famous.

Friends and former bandmates have arranged the fundraiser for the musician, who is unable to work due to his ill-health.

Fellow musician Gavin Barnett, of Rayners Lane, South Harrow, will oversee the benefit gig tomorrow (Friday).

Bands will take to the stage at Earlsmead Stadium, the home of Harrow Borough FC, in Earlsmead, South Harrow, between 8pm and midnight.

Mr Barnett said: "He's played with Led Zeppelin and he was with them before they were famous.

"He's originally from Birmingham but has been living in the Harrow area for 30 years.

"I've known Mac for 30-odd years and he had throat cancer before, about 14 years ago, and all of a sudden it returned and he's got cancer of the lung and it's gone to his brain now, and he's having chemotherapy.

"He's losing a lot of drumming work, he has a wife, two sons and a mortgage and it's not easy.

"We want to do whatever we can to help."

Mr Barnett has invited many of Mac's old bandmates and friends to attend the event: "They're coming from everywhere.

"It's one massive jam for people to get together, and if he feels up for it he may get up and play a couple of numbers."

Tickets will be £8 on the door.
