Serial killer Levi Bellfield could be charged with the murder of Walton teenager Milly Dowler before the end of the year, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Bellfield was living in Walton at the time of 13 year old Milly's disappearance in 2002 when she walking home from Walton train station.

Police submitted a dossier filled with thousands of pages of documents and circumstantial evidence against Bellfield to the CPS in August. They have now revealed that a decision on whether he will be prosecuted should be made before the year is out.

This comes after two national newspapers reported on Thursday (17) that he would in fact be charged with her murder after the information was leaked by unnamed legal sources.

Bellfield, a former bouncer, car clamper and Shepperton taxi driver is currently serving life sentences in Wakefield Prison, Yorkshire for killing students Marsha McDonnell and Amelie Delagrange as well as the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy. He has always denied being involved in Milly's death despite admitting he was driving a red Daewoo that was seen in the area at the time.

A spokeswoman for the CPS, said :"We are still reviewing the file but hope to have an outcome by the end of the year."

The body of the Heathside student was found in Yately, Hampshire by mushroom pickers six months after she disappeared.

In October, police scoured Bedfont Lake, near Heathrow, looking for a car they believed was linked to her disappearance but found nothing.
