A primary school in Bedfont has been upgraded from 'requires improvement' to 'good', as Ofsted inspectors commended the 'energy' shown to achieve the turnaround.

Bedfont Primary School was told back in January 2013 that it needed to step up pupils' attainment, the quality of teaching and the leadership.

But following a visit at the end of last month, inspectors rated it 'good' overall and for all five criteria on which it was assessed.

"Leaders have tackled previous areas of underperformance effectively and with energy. Their plans cover the right priorities. The school is well placed to continue to improve," inspectors wrote in their assessment, published on December 18.

They said most pupils were lagging behind their peers when they joined the school in Hatton Road, where three fifths of children speak English as an additional language, but left with average or above average skills.

The school earned special praise for the way staff and governors closely followed the progress of disadvantaged pupils to help them keep up with their classmates.

However, it was told to ensure pupils were given work at the right level for their ability, and to improve the outdoor play facilities for children in its nursery and reception classes.

In Ofsted's annual report, published earlier this month, Hounslow came 31st out of 32 London boroughs for the amount of primary schools rated 'good' or 'outstanding', though the council said that figure had already improved since the report was put together.
