Barack Obama, an African-American black president-elect, of the United States of America, has proved to be a phenomenon of unprecedented proportions.

He has done something which no one in their wildest dreams thought was possible in this day and age of prevalent institutional racism, prejudice and hatred based on one's skin colour, race and religious intolerance.

Martin Luther King Jr dreamed about it, but no one imagined that his dream would become a reality, so soon and unexpectedly.

Can anyone imagine a white man to be a president of an African or an Asian state? One will say how can it happen, it is impossible. That is what has happened in America, a seismic change.

There are many factors and circumstances involved in this miracle, but the impossible has become possible.A new ray of light has risen in America to give hope, inspiration and peace to the world embroiled in unnecessary wars, terrorism, financial disasters, hunger, disease and natural disasters. Barack Obama is a symbol of hope, but he cannot do much on his own without the support of the people of America and the world at large.

It is an uphill task with mammoth challenges, but as he said it can be overcome with determination, responsibility, sacrifices and perseverance.

So we should not despair as a new dawn has risen on the horizon for a better, happier and equitable world.
