A CHURCH and a synagogue got in the Fairtrade spirit by taking part in the world's biggest banana-eating event.

Members of St Lawrence Church, in Bridle Road, Eastcote,and Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue,in Oaklands Gate,Northwood, took part in the event on Saturday as part of Fairtrade Fortnight, which started on February 23 and ended on Sunday.

More than 300 synagogue members and about 55 churchgoers, from babies right through to adults, took part in the event.

Sylvia Hooper,the church warden, said: "We took part because we are a Fairtrade church and want to promote the importance of Fairtrade.

"The day was extremely successful and fun. The children also played games, did quizzes and made banana smoothies."

A total of 379,016 people registered nationally for the banana-eating event, which ran from midday on Friday to midday on Saturday.
