A baby boy was rescued by local firefighters after he got his leg stuck in a shopping trolley.

Finnley Macphail was taken shopping by his mother, Lucy Day, 27, of Woodford Crescent, Pinner, and grandmother, Jennifer Day, on Monday, but to the pair’s horror the little boy accidentally got his leg trapped in the child’s seat.

The incident took place at Tesco, in Ashhill Drive, Pinner, and when the mother spotted he was stuck the store’s fishmonger Lee Adams stepped in and tried to release him using butter.

When that failed, firefighters from Harrow Fire Station were called to the rescue.

Station watch manager Peter Shaw said: “It is quite an unusual one, but we managed to cut away the bars from the baby. You could see the relief from the grandmother when we managed to set the baby free. It was nice for us to help people in that way. It is unusual and caused a bit of a commotion in the store. I think Tesco staff tried to use butter to release the baby but that didn’t work.”

Compliance manager at the Tesco store, John Hainsford, said: “He saw that the little boy’s leg was in the wrong place. We tried to release the leg with liquid butter by massaging it on his leg, but it would not ease up so we called the fire brigade who were brilliant and arrived really quickly.

“They took the trolley apart and the trolley is now in the trolley grave yard. The baby did not seem stressed out by the situation, I think the grandmother was the most upset by it all. We are sorry it happened but pleased that Lee spotted the problem straight away. And it shows that firemen don’t just put out fires!”

Finnley's mother, Lucy said: "We just popped to Tesco to grab some lunch as it's our local and then suddenly I saw that his leg was in a funny place and he was trying to climb out, the Tesco staff came to help they were really great, they used butter to help ease the leg, it was becoming swollen and my mum was a bit upset by it all, I tried to remain calm as I didn't want to upset Finnley.

"He seemed okay though, he wasn't crying or anything. Afterwards I took him straight to the doctor and he is fine now."
