A school that was put into special measures by Ofsted last year could become an academy in an attempt to turn around its fortunes.

The chance for parents, teachers and neighbours to submit their opinions on the potential change of Aylward Primary School, in Pangbourne Drive, Stanmore, to an academy, has closed now, and should the decision be approved it could become an academy by April 1.

The plan is for Bentley Wood Trust, which run Bentley Wood High School in Bridges Road, Stanmore, to oversee the transition for Aylward Primary School, which received an 'outstanding' rating from Ofsted in 2010 but was put into 'special measures' after being deemed to be inadequate by Ofsted in May last year.

Governors of Bentley Wood High School and Aylward Primary School said in a statement: “We believe that children at Aylward Primary School should be making better progress and achieving higher standards than they have been.

“Bentley Wood High School has the capability and capacity to support the headteacher and the staff at Aylward Primary School to sustain the improvements seen in the 2013 results, and improve the progress and achievement of pupils even further."

When Aylward Primary School was put into special measures last year, Catherine Doran, Harrow Council’s corporate director of children and families, hinted that a plan to make the school an academy was under consideration.

She said: “We are confident that further progress will be made over the next few months and the school are working with us, and the Department for Education, to look at future options.”

The Bentley Wood Trust could now be set to oversee the transition to an academy.

“Local schools should work together, support each other, and learn from each other to benefit the local community,” the statement added.

“Aylward Primary School would benefit from support from Bentley Wood High School to the headteacher, the leadership team, and the local governing body to ensure effective leadership and management that is focused on pupil performance.”

Bentley Wood High School became an academy in 2011, and then received an 'outstanding' rating from Ofsted the following year.
