AN OFF-duty Special Constable who helped capture an armed robber planning an audacious £1million ‘smash and grab’ heist at Selfridges has been commended.

Ian Bullimore - who since the incident has since followed in his parents’ footsteps and become a PC, and is based in Harrow - was travelling in a taxi travelling across London in March 2013 when he noticed uniformed officers struggling with two men on the ground.

He stopped the cab to assist the officers, when one of the suspects broke free, and Ian gave chase - unaware the duo had been detained on suspicion of armed robbery.

PC Bullimore pursuit the man until eventually PC Evans managed to tackle the man to the floor in Piccadilly Circus.

During the struggle, SC Bullimore sustained an injury to his shoulder.

What was realised afterwards what that the man had thrown away an number of axes he and other men had planned to use to hold up Selfridges in central London.

The man was later jailed for seven years for his involvement in the heist conspriacy.

PC Bullimore, received his commendation from Assistant Commissioner of Territorial Policing Helen King on Friday July 4 at New Scotland Yard.

PC Bullimore said: “It was a very proud moment receiving the award, especially in front of my parents, both of whom were Metropolitan Police officers.

“I believe it is something that all of our colleagues in the service would have done when witnessing colleagues on the street requiring assistance."

Harrow Borough Commander Simon Ovens said: “PC Ian Bullimore was off duty at the time, but he acted without any thought for his own safety, to assist in detaining a male believed to be involved in an armed robbery and who posed a significant risk to the public.

“Ian’s quick thinking and action have upheld the core values of the Metropolitan Police Service, for which this officer has shown he is a true ambassador.”

Asst Cmr King said: “It gives me great pleasure to officially recognise the outstanding work and bravery of the men and women who have gone over and above the call of duty.

“These ceremonies are a great opportunity to hear the incredible stories of the work going on across London each and every day.

“I am very proud of all that has been achieved, and privileged to be leading such an inspirational group of people serving the communities of London.”
