THE hunt is on to find outstanding young people to take part in the sixth achievement awards run by a black youth group.

The awards, renamed the Dr John Roberts QC Awards Ceremony, after the first black QC in England, will be presented at a black tie dinner at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel, Ealing Common, on July 9.

The Descendants, a black youth group, is looking for children and young people of African and Caribbean descent who have made an outstanding contribution or achievement against the odds.

The categories are students who excel in all areas of their education, students who work hard and achieve against all the odds, student of the year, male and female, students who excel in arts and sports and students who show entrepreneurial qualities.

Margaret Noel, Descendants' founder, said: "As we continue to read horrific stories about the children who are doing the wrong things we forget the children and young people who are working hard and continuing to 'aim high' and achieve sometimes against great odds.

"The aim of this achievement award ceremony is to celebrate achievements and give a balance, encouraging other young people to focus on the positive, and aim high."

The closing date is May 24.
