A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder during a police crack down on domestic violence in Hounslow.

Officers arrested 27 people as they raided eight addresses across the borough last Thursday (January 23) as part of the London-wide Operation Big Wing.

Of those arrests, 10 were for alleged domestic violence offences, including one for attempted murder, one for harassment and three for malicious communications.

Police confirmed the man arrested for attempted murder had been bailed pending further enquiries, but they refused to give any further details due to the sensitive nature of the case.

There were also arrests during the day for drug dealing, assault, robbery and breach of curfew, as scores of officers hit the streets of Hounslow.

Chief Inspector Jon Kennedy, who led the operation, said: "We're very pleased with the number of arrests. We want to send a strong message that domestic violence will not be tolerated."

The operation followed the launch of a domestic violence campaign in December by Hounslow Council and the charity Outwest, which supports the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in west London.

Councillor Sue Sampson, the council's cabinet member for domestic violence, whose sister was shot dead by her estranged husband in 1976, said: "Domestic violence is a stain on our community and country. Thankfully the issue is no longer a taboo subject and society is rapidly realising that it can affect anyone."

Hounslow has a dedicated team of 21 officers investigating domestic violence. They have investigated 1,693 allegations of domestic violence since April 2013.

Incidents of domestic violence rose marginally in Hounslow last year, from 3,028 in 2012 to 3,033. During the same period, cases in London were up by six per cent to 52,185.
