PROFESSOR Evans, our medical director, is a front-line NHS doctor, treating many hundreds of seriously ill patients each year, and saving the lives of many of them (Trust boss earns more than PM, Harefield Gazette, July 21).

He is totally committed to his work in adult intensive care medicine and spends many nights, weekends and public holidays in the unit in rotation with his colleagues.

The Trust views the negative profiling of such outstanding and dedicated NHS staff as hitting well below the belt. And to target a senior doctor who has been, and remains, a ferocious champion of Harefield Hospital is extraordinary.

For the record, more than 80 per cent of Professor Evans's salary relates to this hands-on, 'front-line' clinical care of patients, and is regulated by NHS salary scales. Indeed, less than 20 per cent of his income relates to management duties.
