A MURAL has been proposed to turn a dreary space into a colourful focal point which supporters believe could put Northolt on the map.

The black space on the back of a row of garages in Eastcote Lane has been chosen for the painting, which could include images of Northolt Park Racecourse and planes from RAF Northolt.

So far, ward councillors have recruited artist Peter Jonas, of Hanwell, to create a mock design which includes a space for young children in the area to paint their own ideas.

Chris Summers, councillor for Northolt Mandeville who came up with the idea, said: "I heard about a mural in Copley Close Estate in Hanwell which was done by kids on the estate. It will put Northolt on the map in a good way and encourage a positive engagement with young people. The example in Copley Close is positive. The kids feel good about themselves and it's made them interested in art."

The project could cost about £7,700 of the ward's yearly £37,000 budget, nearly half of which would go towards rendering the wall so it can be painted on and easily cleaned.

However, councillors are working towards reducing the costs by at least half.

Pupils from Northolt High School in Eastcote Lane North, and their parents, will be among those at the next ward forum in June when plans will be discussed before being finalised.
