TWO men have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire which has left a number of people homeless.

Over 50 residents were evacuated at 11.17pm last night (Thursday) from flats at Fairlie House, Pantile Walk, Uxbridge.

The men, aged 19 and 21, were arrested not far away from the scene on suspicion of arson.

Witnesses reported smelling a large amount of petrol at the scene.

There was heavy smoke throughout the building, above the Pavillions shopping centre, and firefighters worked to stop the fire speading to surrounding flats.

Firefighters spent over two hours battling the blaze on the eight floor which completely gutted the eight floor property.

Anyone with any information which may assist the investigation is asked to call DS Bev Kofi, Hillingdon CID, on 02082461447.
