The future is looking bright for a group of apprentices who recently completed a year-long stint with Hounslow Council.

The 19 young people received certificates for their achievement, with many impressing managers to stay on in a variety of roles.

Their successes were celebrated at a graduation ceremony at the Civic Centre on Friday (October 2).

Among them was 18-year-old Simone Harrington, who spent 12 months working for the borough’s business support team and is set to become a spokeswoman for the apprentice programme at West Thames College, as she is being kept on for another year at Hounslow Council.

She said: “I cannot believe how far I have come from a year ago. I love the office environment and the work I am doing is so interesting.

"I have been able to earn money and now have experience on my CV.

“I would say to anyone who isn’t sure what path they want to go down to get an apprenticeship.

"It is such a good experience and there is just no way you are going to regret it.”

Councillor Sue Sampson, cabinet member for youth engagement and youth services, added: “I started my career as an apprentice.

"The apprenticeships were called Youth Training Schemes in those days. I was two years and nine months into a hairdressing apprenticeship when I left because I decided the career wasn’t for me.

"But things are very different now. With a modern apprenticeship you are mentored throughout your time with us and I know that many of you are staying on in jobs at Hounslow Council.

“If I can offer one piece of advice it is to never let anyone tell you ‘no’. If you want something enough, just go for it."
