Apple Pay has launched in the UK, allowing customers to use their phones to pay for items.

You can now use your Apple phone or watch to pay for your food shopping, meals out or iced coffees as the contactless system is accepted in over 250,000 locations including Marks & Spencers, Boots, Starbucks, Lidl, Nandos and the London Transport network.

However, there are still some banks that aren’t signed up to the service. American Express, Nationwide, NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander, Ulster Bank and MBNA are all set up with Apple Pay.

Customers of HSBC, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank and TSB are expected to have to wait until September or October.

Contactless payments are usually capped at £20 to prevent fraud.

To set up Apple Pay on your iPhone, you need to download the latest version of iOS software 8.4.

You’ll find this in the Settings menu, under General and Software Update.

Once updated, go to the Passbook app and the option to set up Apple Pay should appear. Click ‘Add Credit or Debit Card’.

You can then manually enter your credit or debit card details, or take a photo of the front of the card using the camera on your phone.

Once you have added a card, the phone’s Near Field Communication chip can be used on contactless card readers.

For security reasons all payments must be confirmed by using Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

Because of this, Apple Pay only works on iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
