DETECTIVES investigating the murder of an exiled Pakistani politician yards from his front door in Edgware have renewed appeals for information three years after the killing.

Dr Imran Farooq, 50, had travelled from his job at a pharmacy in Old Street, east London, to his family home, in Green Lane, when he was attacked at 5.30pm on Thursday, September 16, 2010.

The 50-year-old, a leading member of his native country’s third-largest Muttahida Quami Movement Party, died as a result of multiple stab wounds and blunt trauma to the head.

Recovered from the scene were a house brick, an Ausbein Messer knife with a five-inch blade and a Schinken Messer knife with a five-and-a-half inch blade from the same discount store pack, all of which were used in the attack.

The Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, which took over the investigation in 2011, have spoken to 4,076 people, reviewed 6,350 documents and followed up 2,114 lines of inquiry.

They are appealing for people to come forward on the third anniversary of Dr Farooq’s death and a reward of up to £20,000 has been offered for anyone providing information leading to the identification, arrest, and prosecution of those responsible for his murder.

A police statement said: “It is thought that his murder would have required careful planning and help from other people, some of whom may have provided assistance or information unwittingly.

“Detectives believe Dr Farooq was about to launch a new independent political career before his death and this remains a key line of inquiry in this investigation.”

Eight people have been interviewed under caution and on June 18 officers executed search warrants at two addresses in north-west London. Six days later detectives arrested a 52-year-old man on suspicion of conspiracy to murder after he landed at Heathrow Airport on a flight from Canada. He was released on police bail to return later this month.
