I normally work on this column on the Underground. But not this week.

Because this week I’m on holiday and, at the moment, I’m sitting in a field in Devon with a beautiful view overlooking the River Exe.

It’s great here, not least because I’ve just been to what must be one of the happiest places in Exmouth – the Dog Beach. It seemed to me that not only were the dogs ecstatically happy but also the owners were getting
so much pleasure from seeing their dogs enjoying themselves.

I’m sure that Lolly, the twelve year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier featured this week would love to have a walk on the beach. Lolly came into the care of The Mayhew after her owner died. She has wonderful credentials.

She is sweet-natured, calm and sensible. She is well-behaved, toilet-trained and can be left on her own for a few hours without any problems. She is friendly with strangers including children. She travels well in the car. She is good with dogs she meets on walks but is not so keen on dogs who visit her home. Lolly’s foster mum says she is a really easy dog and a joy to have around.

Lolly could live happily with a first time owner and could live with sensible children six years old and upwards. She would need to be the only dog in the home. If you would like to know more about Lolly phone The Mayhew on 020 8969 0178 or see more details including videos at www.themayhew.org/dogs/lolly

I don’t know if you’ve heard of the Cabbages and Frocks Market but it has been listed by The Independent as being amongst the 50 best markets. It’s well worth a visit not least because on August 18 th, they are hosting a Doggy Sports Day with The Mayhew Animal Home as their chosen charity. Categories include Best Athlete and Fastest Waggy Tail.

It all takes place at St Marylebone Church grounds, Marylebone High Street, W1U 5BA from 11am-5pm. Entry is free.
