Former pop star Alex James visited pupils at The Smallberry Green School in Isleworth this morning to launch a national competition.

The Blur bassist turned cheese-maker was at the school in Turnpike Lane in his role as ambassador for the food assurance scheme Red Tractor.

He taught youngsters there how to make butter from cream, helped them create collages and planted seeds to show them where their food comes from.

He also launched Red Tractor's competition challenging primary school students to produce posters, create their own menus or report on food production and nutrition for the chance to win a visit from a farm.

Yesterday marked the start of Red Tractor Week, which this year is celebrating the new focus on food in the re-jigged National Curriculum and the introduction of healthier school meals.

The Red Tractor logo is displayed on food and drink packaging to show it has been produced responsibly in the UK.
