The A40 did not fully re-open until 11pm last night (Thursday, October 16) after the death of a woman who fell from the Swakeleys flyover in Hillingdon .

Transport for London says although two lanes were opened westbound by 7.50pm, the rest of the road remained shut while officers from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit carried out enquiries into the circumstances of the incident.

Emergency services were called shortly after 4pm to reports that a person had fallen on to the London-bound carriageway, sparking hours of traffic chaos.

Traffic was still tailing back into Uxbridge for half a mile at 8pm, the M25 was closed at its junction with the M40, and the A412 North Orbital through Maple Cross and roads through Harefield were extra busy as drivers sought alternative routes.
