Delighted students celebrated at St Mark's Catholic School in Hounslow this morning, where the A-level A*-C pass rate was 93.1 per cent.

The sense of relief was palpable for most pupils at the as the anxious wait ended this morning and they secured their places at university.

Among those celebrating was Jonathan Tobey Gorrino, of Whitton, who is off to Oxford to study biochemistry after bagging three A*s.

Asked if there was a reward waiting for him at home, he said 'no, but I'm sure I can arrange something'.

Ella Whiddett, of Twickenham, scored three As to secure her place at Cambridge studying English.

"I was feeling really, really bad this morning. I thought I was going to have to go through clearing," said the 18-year-old.

"I'm going out tonight celebrating with my friends and then we're having a family dinner tomorrow. All my best friends did brilliantly. I'm really proud of them."

The school's head of sixth form, Catherine Crouch, said: "We're delighted and extremely happy for the students who have worked so hard for these well-deserved results. A big thanks also goes out to all the staff for their hard work."
