THE STREETS of Willesden were lined with more than 8,000 people who enjoyed a spectacular St Patrick’s Day Parade.

The annual event on Saturday  attracted more people, floats and attractions than ever before according to on eof the organisers, Tony Antoniou.

The parade started at 2pm outside Willesden Green Underground Station and travelled to the Willesden Green Library Centre.

Lots of people donned fancy dress, and the event attracted a wide section of the local community, with many coming in from outside to enjoy the only official parade in London on St Patrick’s Day itself.

Mr Antoniou said: “The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic, it was a great day. It didn’t rain during the parade, which was good.

"We want to try and keep the tradition of this event alive in Brent and keep it going in the future.”

Brent Mayor, councillor Aslam Choudry, attended, as well as Brent Council leader Ann John.

The festivities at the library centre continued until 7.30pm, with visitors enjoying live bands and refreshments. Children’s activities included face painting and balloon making.

This year’s parade was the last to be funded by the council due to funding cuts.

Brent Irish Advisory Service (BIAS) and the organising board of the parade will have to raise around £25,000 to meet the cost of next year’s event.
