VULNERABLE occupants of a supported housing block in Harrow had to be evacuated when a flat caught fire.

The blaze broke out at Parkfield House, a three-storey property in Headstone Lane run by Willow Housing And Care housing association, at 4.30am yesterday.

Twenty firefighters from Harrow, Stanmore and Northolt were called out to extinguish the flames at the building, which contains 45 apartments and managerial staff on site.

John Doherty, manager of Harrow Fire Station, said: "It was a small fire - mainly smoke - and the cause is still being investigated.

"Firefighters worked with staff to evacuate to safety all the residents as a precaution. We were there for a short time, perhaps half an hour or 40 minutes."

A four-roomed flat on the first floor was parly damaged by fire and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service treated three of the 42 evacuees for minor smoke inhalation.
