£120,000 is needed to secure the future for over 100 homeless cats in need of food, toys and veterinary treatment.

The Southall RSPCA cattery is almost at capacity with 113 cats and kittens needing food, veterinary care, toys and medicines.

The centre, which is licensed to look after 118 felines at any one time, held their annual open day on Saturday and raised £1,120 through raffles and stalls.

Most of the moggies who come through their doors have been in car accidents, attacked by foxes and dogs or have simply been abandoned. RSPCA workers in Southall are also dealing with an influx of kittens with 70 at the centre and more on the way in the maternity unit.

Centre manager Michelle Do Carmo said: “From January to June this year the running of the cattery cost £121,000. Over £12,000 of that goes on vets’ fees and drugs, and £4,000 goes on food. The rest goes on staff salaries, running costs for the premises and the vehicles. So there is a big fundraising drive now to get us through the next six months as we’re going to need another £120,000 to get us to Christmas. All the cats come from animal hospitals from across London so most of them have gone through some kind of trauma. We have quite a few with three legs, one eye or no tail. Once recovered from their surgery these injuries really don’t hold them back.

“Since January we’ve had 434 cats through our doors and homed 338 of those. Things are getting worse these days as kitten season is now all year round and we also take in cats from across London. Our annual open day helped immensely on Saturday. We held a Raffle, BBQ, teddy tombola, toy stand, pet stall, clothes bags belts and shoes, bric a brac, Mystic Steph telling fortunes, face painting and kids games, refreshments and books. Around 150 people turned up and we raised a fantastic £1,120. So, a big thanks to the people of Southall. We always need donations of cats’ toys and food and if anyone would like to help us raise the £120,000 they can send donations to us in the post or by hand.”

Councillor Gary Malcolm, who adopted his cat Isis from the RSPCA last year, said: “The RSPCA Southall cattery is a wonderful organisation helping hundreds of cats find good homes. I attended the open day to help raise funds for the RSPCA so they can give lots of cats a good life, after many who have been mistreated by uncaring owners.”
