A devoted grandson returning home with his grandmother's ashes has slammed the council for having "no compassion" after refusing to cancel a bus lane ticket.

Navkaran Cheema of Cambridge Road in Hounslow appealed the fine which was issued when he pulled into a bus lane to get in and park at the back of Sainsbury's on Staines Road.

Under the circumstances an adjudicator requested Hounslow council to cancel the ticket.

Mr Cheema who has vowed to fight the ticket against a heartless council, said: "On the way back I got really upset and pulled into the bus lane, but I pulled in to stop at the back of Sainsbury's and compose myself.

"The way they (council) spoke to me was with complete disregard and no compassion.

"I don't understand how Hounslow council can first of all not cancel it and reply with a really degrading email as if I was a drunk driver.

"Their response was, that if I was not in sound physical or mental state then I should not be on the road."

The 27-year-old lost his grandmother who lived in the family home in May last year.

The day after the funeral he went to collect her ashes and suddenly became overcome with emotion and broke down.

Now, 10 months later he is still fighting for the £130 fine to be scrapped, which will be doubled if it has not been paid within 28 days.

The hearing in front of an adjudicator was rescheduled to February this year, and a request was made for the charge to be withdrawn.

But in response the council's parking and traffic appeals service refused the appeal on March 1.

Mr Cheema, who is a registered driver under his sister Ravneek's car, said: "The adjudicator was very supportive and nice, and in his replies back to the council notes he is disappointed with the decision the council has come too."

A council spokesperson said: “We would like to offer our condolences to Miss Cheema for her loss and, while we have every sympathy for her, we do not agree that the Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) should be cancelled as it was not Miss Cheema driving at the time when the car pulled into the bus lane.”

The council website states it is the owner and not the driver of the vehicle who is liable to pay the PCN.
