Urgent appeal to donors to give blood in Wembley

The NHS desperately needs your help to ensure people in life-threatening conditions receive the treatment they need, quickly

The NHS Blood and Transplant authority is appealing for donors in Wembley as certain blood types are at a short supply in the area.

Every blood donation is vital but NHS Blood and Transplant particularly needs to ensure supplies of the universal blood group O Rh Negative, which is often in short supply as demand is so great. They also need to ensure supplies of rarer blood groups A Rh Negative, B Rh Negative and AB Rh Negative, as these are also vulnerable to shortfall.

The organisation's senior marketing coordinator, Michelle Laserna, said: “We always need people to donate blood to help patients who rely on blood donors to save their lives or to keep them well.

“We would like to encourage both new and existing donors to take the time to donate blood this month. We can promise donors a warm welcome and the satisfaction that their life-saving donation will be used to help people in need.”

"Wembley has people from a number of ethnic backgrounds. Some blood types are more common in the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities while some rare types are only found within these communities so we hope more people will come forward and donate.”

“Donations are used to treat blood disorders, such as sickle cell anaemia and thalassaemia, which are more likely to affect BAME communities. These patients ideally need blood from a similar ethnic background. We also need to ensure blood supplies for emergency treatment of those with rare blood types, for example after road accidents or childbirth complications.”

The next blood donation event in Wembley is on Friday May 8 at St Joseph's Social Club with session times between 12.50pm to 1.30pm and 2.30pm to 5.30pm.
